Rev. David Wakeland - Pastor
David Wakeland was born in Hattiesburg, MS. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he graduated with a degree in history. After graduating he moved to St. Louis to attend Covenant Theological Seminary. During his seminary studies David took a year off for an internship with Dr. Joseph Pipa at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Houston. After graduating from seminary David accepted a call to the First Presbyterian Church in Muscle Shoals, AL where he served as pastor from 1986-1992. David has been the pastor at Southwest since the spring of 1992. He is married to Melinda Montague and they have four sons.
Rev. Ken Thurman - Associate Pastor
Ken graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1973 and has worked as a Mechanical Engineer for 30 years. He later graduated from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, MS, in 1994 with a Master of Divinity. Ken joined Southwest PCA (SWPCA) as a member in 1997 and became a Ruling Elder in 2000. He was called by the congregation of SWPCA to the office of Associate Pastor in 2003 on a part-time basis and has continued in his occupation as a Mechanical Engineer.
Ken has been married to Linda Dahmer Thurman since 1971 and they have two grown daughters, Laura Wimberly who lives in Spring, TX, and Lindsay Newcomer who lives in Bryan, TX. Both are married to Christian men. Ken and Linda have three grandsons: Steven, born Sept 2006; James, born June 2010; and Tommy, born February 2011.
Melinda Wakeland - Church Secretary
Melinda Montague Wakeland was born in Hattiesburg, MS. She attended Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi where she earned her degree in elementary education. She and her husband David married in 1979 and have four sons. She taught school for four years while David finished his degree. Besides her secretarial work Melinda is a Real Estate agent.
Rev. Toby Welch - Associate Pastor to the Deaf Church
Scott Holshouser - Pianist
Scott has been with Southwest Presbyterian since 1995. He has been the keyboardist for the Houston Symphony since 1985, and accompanist for the Houston Symphony Chorus. He has performed solo concertos with the Houston, San Antonio, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Stavanger, Norway symphonies. Scott has accompanied over 100 young artist competitions to date, and he plays orchestra and chamber music every year with the Grand Teton Music Festival.
Jim Jennings - Choir Director
Jim Jennings has 40 years of vocal experience singing baritone and tenor in numerous high school, university, and church choirs. He is now putting that experience to use in his first role as a choir director at Southwest Presbyterian Church.
Jim is a Principal Reservoir Engineer for Shell Oil Company. He has been married for 28 years to his wife Melinda, and has two sons, James and William.
